Practice What You Teach

For me, especially in my first two years teaching, I got so wrapped up in teaching English that I forgot to continue enjoying English for myself. This year I’ve jump-started my reading and writing practices and rediscovered why I wanted to become an English teacher in the first place. This rediscovery has elevated my passion for the subject (which in turn increases student engagement) and allows me to continue to “speak from experience” when discussing reading and writing in class. If you’re in the same boat, and you’re a teacher, but not an active practitioner of your subject, try to find your passion for the subject again and see how it pays off in class!
